Daya blog cover. How to withdraw money from Upwork in Nigeria.

The cheapest way to move money out of Upwork in Nigeria is Direct to Local Bank, at $0.99 a transfer. It arrives in naira within four business days, and Upwork lets you take out between $5 and $3,000 at a time. But it converts at a rate Upwork's payment partner sets. To keep dollars instead, Direct to U.S. Bank costs $2.99 and can go to US account details from Grey, Daya Borders or Raenest. Daya Borders takes 0% of what arrives, so a $1,000 withdrawal lands as $997.01.

This guide walks through every way Upwork will pay a Nigerian freelancer, what each one costs, how long each one takes, and what each one leaves in your bank account. If you're still working out how to take international payments generally, the guide to getting paid by international clients in Nigeria covers the accounts themselves.

How much does Upwork charge to withdraw money in Nigeria?

Upwork charges $0.99 for Direct to Local Bank, $2.99 for Direct to U.S. Bank if your tax address is outside the United States, and $50 for a US dollar wire transfer. Payoneer withdrawals carry a per-transfer fee that Upwork describes as small but doesn't put a number to. Every one of these sits on top of the service fee Upwork already took out of the contract.

Upwork's own withdrawal fees, from its published fee pages. Checked 10 September 2026.
Withdrawal methodWhat Upwork chargesHow long it takesLimits in Nigeria
Direct to Local Bank$0.99 per transferWithin 4 business days$5 minimum, $3,000 maximum per withdrawal
Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH)$2.99 per transfer with a non-US tax address2 to 5 business daysNone published
US dollar wire transfer$50 per transferUp to 7 business daysNone published
PayoneerA per-transfer fee Upwork doesn't publishAround 24 hours to your Payoneer balanceSet by Payoneer, by country

Each fee is charged per withdrawal, not per dollar. So on Direct to Local Bank, taking out $1,500 once costs $0.99 and taking it out in three goes costs $2.97. Upwork's $3,000 cap on Nigerian bank withdrawals is the ceiling on how much you can batch into one transfer. Full details sit on Upwork's Direct to Local Bank fees, Upwork's Direct to U.S. Bank fees and Upwork's wire transfer fees.

How long does Upwork take to pay into a Nigerian bank account?

The transfer isn't the slow part. Upwork holds hourly earnings for ten days and releases fixed-price milestones five days after your client approves them, and only then can you withdraw anything. Direct to Local Bank adds up to four business days after that. So plan for roughly two weeks between logging the work and seeing naira in your account.

The full sequence on a fixed-price contract looks like this:

  1. Your client approves the milestone.
  2. Upwork holds the money for five days. This is the security period, and it exists so a client can dispute the work.
  3. The money moves to your available balance and you can withdraw it, or your automatic schedule does it for you.
  4. Direct to Local Bank takes up to four business days to reach your Nigerian bank.

Two timing details are worth knowing because they catch people out. Upwork processes Direct to Local Bank withdrawals same-day only if you submit before 12:00 noon UTC, which is 1pm in Lagos. And a brand new withdrawal method can't be used for three full calendar days after you add it, so setting up a new account the morning you need the money won't work.

What's the minimum and maximum you can withdraw from Upwork in Nigeria?

Upwork's minimum Direct to Local Bank withdrawal is $5, and the maximum for Nigeria is $3,000 per withdrawal. Earn more than $3,000 in a period and you split it across several withdrawals, paying $0.99 each time. Upwork publishes no equivalent cap on Direct to U.S. Bank or on wire transfers.

If you regularly clear more than $3,000 a month, that cap is a reason to look at the US bank route rather than the naira one. It also means you can't empty a large balance in a hurry if the naira is moving.

Is it cheaper to send Upwork money to a Nigerian bank or to a USD account?

Direct to Local Bank is cheaper on visible fees at $0.99, against $2.99 plus whatever your USD account charges. The USD account route usually wins anyway, for one reason: it lets you hold dollars and choose when to convert, instead of accepting whatever naira rate Upwork's partner applies on the day.

There are two routes, and they work differently:

  1. Direct to Local Bank. Upwork converts your dollars to naira and pays your Nigerian bank. You pay $0.99 and you get one rate, on Upwork's timing, not yours.
  2. Direct to U.S. Bank into a USD account. Upwork sends dollars to US account details in your name, held by a provider like Cleva, Daya Borders, Raenest or Grey. You pay $2.99 to Upwork plus the provider's deposit fee, the dollars sit in your account, and you convert to naira when you want to.

Upwork's own currency conversion page says its payment partners set the exchange rate on conversions and may add a markup, without publishing what that markup is. That's the number you can't check on the naira route, and it's usually larger than the $2 difference in transfer fees. If the mechanics of that are new to you, how the naira exchange rate actually works is the longer explanation.

Which USD accounts work with Upwork, and what does each charge?

Cleva, Daya, Raenest and Grey all give Nigerian freelancers US account and routing details in their own name, which is exactly what Upwork's Direct to U.S. Bank method needs. What separates them is the fee they take off the deposit when the Upwork money lands, and then what the conversion to naira costs.

Each provider's own published fee schedule. Checked 14 September 2026.

What Daya Borders and Cleva charge on an Upwork deposit

Daya Borders takes 0% on incoming dollars and euros, uncapped and with no conditions attached, against Grey's 0.8% and Raenest's flat $2 (or $4 from $500) on the same Upwork deposit. Cleva is level with it on Upwork money specifically: Cleva's published pricing lists Upwork deposits as free, while its other ACH deposits cost 0.8%, with a $2 minimum and a $5 cap. On the Upwork deposit itself there's nothing to choose between Cleva and Daya Borders.

The conversion to naira is the second cut, and this is where the picture gets less comfortable for everyone:

  • Raenest shows its USD to NGN conversion fee in the app before you confirm, and sends naira to a Nigerian bank for free. Raenest's conversion fees page says the fee varies by currency.
  • Grey charges 1% on the conversion, capped at $6, plus 35 naira to send naira to a Nigerian bank, per its Grey's fees and charges page and Grey's conversion fee groups.
  • Cleva publishes free bank transfers to Nigeria on its transfer fees page, with the 50 naira stamp duty going to the bank rather than to Cleva, but it doesn't publish its conversion fee.
  • Raenest and Grey charge a stated percentage to convert, so for the naira step, compare what each app would give you for the same amount on the same day. Where Daya Borders is clearest is the deposit: 0% on incoming dollars and euros, with no cap.

Payoneer is the other route, and it's the one to be careful with. Payoneer's published pricing charges $1.50 to withdraw US dollars to a US dollar bank account, and up to 3% when the withdrawal involves a currency conversion. USD to naira is always a conversion. It also charges an annual account fee of $29.95 if you receive less than $2,000 in any twelve months, which catches part-time freelancers. Payoneer earns its place when a client can only pay Payoneer, and loses on price the rest of the time.

What changed for Upwork withdrawals on 1 September 2026?

Upwork started charging $2.99 for every Direct to U.S. Bank withdrawal made by a freelancer whose tax address is outside the United States. Before 1 September 2026 that transfer was free for everyone. It is still free if your Upwork tax address is a US one.

What it means for you: if you get paid into a Nigerian-issued USD account, your Upwork tax address is Nigerian, so this is you. A freelancer withdrawing weekly now pays about $155 a year in Upwork transfer fees where they used to pay nothing. Withdrawing monthly instead of weekly cuts that to roughly $36. The change is on Upwork's Direct to U.S. Bank fees page.

Can you use Wise to withdraw from Upwork in Nigeria?

No. Upwork's digital banks page lists Wise as a withdrawal destination, but Wise doesn't let people resident in Nigeria receive money into account details or hold a balance. The Nigerian side of Wise is built for sending money out, so there's nothing for Upwork to pay into.

Upwork also warns that when you use any digital bank rather than a traditional one, it may not be able to help you trace a payment that goes missing, because the money passes through an intermediary partner bank. That's worth knowing before you route a large milestone through any fintech account.

How do you set up an Upwork withdrawal method?

Setting up a withdrawal method takes a few minutes, and then three days of waiting before you can use it. The steps are the same whichever method you pick.

  1. Open Settings, then Get Paid, in your Upwork account.
  2. Add a withdrawal method and choose Direct to Local Bank, Direct to U.S. Bank, wire transfer or Payoneer.
  3. Enter the account details, including the bank codes. Check every digit, because Upwork charges you the withdrawal fee again if a transfer bounces back on wrong details.
  4. Check that the name on the receiving account matches your verified name on Upwork exactly. A mismatch is the most common reason a withdrawal is returned.
  5. Choose a withdrawal schedule, or leave it manual and withdraw yourself.
  6. Wait three full calendar days. Upwork blocks new withdrawal methods for that long before the first transfer can go out.

If you're taking payments from more than one platform, receiving money from the US into Nigeria covers the same setup for clients paying you directly.

Why did your Upwork withdrawal fail or arrive late?

Most failed Upwork withdrawals come down to one of six things, and Upwork's withdrawal troubleshooting guide names them. Work down this list before you contact support.

  • The name on your bank account doesn't match your verified Upwork name.
  • A digit in the account number or bank code is wrong. When a transfer is returned for details you entered, Upwork sends the money back minus the original withdrawal fee.
  • The withdrawal method is less than three calendar days old.
  • Your tax information isn't complete. Upwork needs both a withdrawal method and tax details before it will release anything.
  • The earnings are still inside the security period, five days on fixed-price milestones and ten days on hourly work.
  • A Nigerian or US bank holiday fell in the window, or your bank is holding the incoming transfer at its end.

What's left of a $1,000 Upwork contract by the time it reaches your bank?

On a $1,000 contract with a client you've already billed more than $500, Upwork's 10% service fee takes $100 before you see anything. What's left of the $900 depends on the route, and the transfer fees are the small part.

The chain runs in this order:

  1. Upwork's service fee. 20% on the first $500 you bill a client, 10% from $500.01 to $10,000, and 5% above $10,000. On this contract that's $100.
  2. The withdrawal fee. $0.99 to a Nigerian bank, or $2.99 to a US account with a Nigerian tax address.
  3. The deposit fee, if you're using a USD account. $0 with Cleva or Daya Borders on Upwork deposits, $2 with Raenest under $500 ($4 above), up to $10 with Grey.
  4. The conversion to naira. The published ones run from 0.5% capped at $2.70 to 1% capped at $6, and on the direct-to-bank route the markup isn't published at all.

Add it up and the visible fees on $900 land somewhere between about $1 and $17. The unpublished exchange rate markup is the one that can dwarf all of it, and it's the reason holding dollars and converting on your own timing tends to beat the convenience of letting Upwork do it. The full sliding scale is on Upwork's freelancer service fees page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to withdraw money from Upwork in Nigeria?

Direct to Local Bank is cheapest at $0.99, but it converts to naira at Upwork's partner's rate. To keep dollars, use Direct to U.S. Bank ($2.99) into US account details from Grey, Daya Borders or Raenest. Daya Borders takes 0% of what arrives, so you convert when the rate suits you.

How long does Upwork take to withdraw money to a Nigerian bank?

Upwork's Direct to Local Bank withdrawals reach a Nigerian bank within four business days, and same-day processing needs the request in before 12:00 noon UTC. The longer wait is before that: Upwork holds hourly earnings for ten days and fixed-price milestones for five days after the client approves them.

What is the minimum you can withdraw from Upwork in Nigeria?

$5. That is Upwork's minimum for a Direct to Local Bank withdrawal, and the maximum for Nigeria is $3,000 per withdrawal. Larger balances have to go out in several transfers, at $0.99 each.

Does Daya Borders charge anything on an Upwork deposit?

No. Daya Borders takes 0% on incoming dollars and euros, with no cap and no conditions, so a $2,000 Upwork payment arrives as $2,000. Cleva is free on Upwork deposits too, Raenest charges a flat $2 or $4 and Grey 0.8%. When you convert to naira, check the amount the app quotes before you confirm.

Can Upwork pay into a Nigerian domiciliary account in dollars?

Yes, by wire transfer, but Upwork charges $50 for each US dollar wire and it can take up to seven business days. On anything under a few thousand dollars that $50 costs more than the naira conversion you were trying to avoid, which is why most Nigerian freelancers use a fintech USD account instead.

Does Payoneer still work with Upwork in Nigeria?

Yes. Payoneer is one of Upwork's withdrawal methods and money reaches a Payoneer balance in around 24 hours. The cost lands later: Payoneer charges up to 3% when a withdrawal involves a currency conversion, and USD to naira always does. Payoneer also charges $29.95 a year if you receive under $2,000 in twelve months.

Why is my Upwork withdrawal taking longer than usual?

The usual causes are a withdrawal method less than three calendar days old, a name on the bank account that doesn't match your verified Upwork name, incomplete tax information, or a bank holiday in the window. Upwork returns a bounced transfer minus the original withdrawal fee, so wrong bank details cost you twice.

Is it better to withdraw from Upwork weekly or monthly?

Monthly, on cost. Upwork charges its withdrawal fee per transfer rather than per dollar, so weekly Direct to U.S. Bank withdrawals cost about $155 a year at $2.99 each, against roughly $36 if you withdraw monthly. Weekly still makes sense if you need the cash flow or you want to convert to naira in smaller pieces.
